Popular mobile messaging app WhatsApp has finally made the move from smartphones to desktops.

The Facebook-owned firm made a web-based version of the app available atweb.whatsapp.com, but you'll need to use the Chrome browser for now (we tried using Opera and the loading page hung around for an eternity).

iPhone users are out of luck too, with Android, BlackBerry 7/10, Symbian and Windows Phone supported - these users will need to download the latest WhatsApp update.

To get started, users will need to open up WhatsApp on their phones, go to the menu and choose WhatsApp Web.

You'll then need to scan the QR Code displayed on web.whatsapp.com to log into your desktop session - not complicated at all.

After a few seconds of loading, the web-based interface pops up, with your contacts on the left and an option to receive desktop notifications. 

Once you're done using WhatsApp Web, simply hit the "log out" option on your phone.
